"Earth's Ethereal corner"
Franz Josef is a small, secluded town nestled among the snow-capped mountains of New Zealand’s South Island. Surrounded by lush valleys on either side, this is a popular destination for travellers eager to witness the majestic glaciers along the island’s west coast. During my trip, I spent the morning trekking through the rainforests around Lake Matheson, where I captured a perfect mirror-like reflection on the lake’s surface. If I were a photographer, it would’ve been a dream come true. Though my knees were sore from the rainforest adventure, it was worth dragging those aching muscles up the Alex Knob Hiking Track for a glimpse of the magnificent Fox Glacier.
The highlight of my trip, however, was an unforgettable helicopter ride to the top of Franz Josef Glacier. Being surrounded by snow in every direction, I was quite surprised when the ice in my hands didn’t feel as cold as I had anticipated. I even started questioning whether all the layers I bundled myself up in were necessary. However, I couldn’t miss out on the chance to flaunt my cute little white beanie that kept my head perfectly warm.
Another ‘must-do’ on South Island was exploring the aquamarine lagoons and lakes of Hokitika Gorge, a scenic two-hour drive from Franz Josef. If you plan to visit, be sure to wear proper gear and bring an insect repellent—sandflies are quite the uninvited guests in this picturesque setting.
